Interviews among demolition companies to define existing needs

One of HISER objectives is to identify and prioritize existing technical and non-technical gaps in current practices for efficient demolition of buildings.

In this framework, several  interviews were performed across Europe, principally with construction and demolition companies but also with other relevant actors (such as recycling plants and manufacturers of recycled products) by HISER beneficiaries. The gathering of dedicated data with European perspective allow us to define and harmonize current existing needs constituting the basis for the development of novel procedures, guidelines, smart tools and policy recommendations.

In order to have a homogeneous and comparable feedback from interviewees a questionnaire was prepared and used by the participants during their interviews.
44 companies/persons were  interviewed from May to September 2015. 39 of them were face to face meetings. The others were replied by phone or email.

First-hand information about the following issues was obtained:
•    Interviewee profile
•    Before demolition: permits, documents, audit/inventory
•    During demolition: machinery, materials
•    Transport: tracking
•    Processing: on-site vs off-site
•    Open questions: predictions & wishes
•    The different sections of the questionnaire have been analysed to obtain a general view of the needs of the demolition and refurbishment sector.

One of the most interested addressed topics is the waste audit/inventories. In most of the cases, there is little information about the building before starting the demolition. If there is any kind of information, it contains very little useful data, often outdated and not reliable. In all countries, demolition contractors make their own inventory or have it done by a professional.  Based on this inventory, the material quantities calculation is made.

There exist several differences among countries. Inventories are always available for public tenders in Belgium and some Spanish regions.
However they are hardly ever available in Italy. In the Netherlands some projects are set on the market as “circular demolition project”. These projects have an inventory which also include the method of treatment according to the “ladder of Lansink”.

There is a general need of obtaining more accurate estimations of Construction and Demolition Wastes (C&DW) quantities and typologies and support the user in the decision making process about the management of those materials. This necessity matches with the HISER objective of developing demolition supporting tools.

The project has received funding from the European Union's  Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 642085.
