The C&D wood waste recycling team (KS Laatuenergia, Tiihonen and VTT, with the collaboration of the partners reintroducing the recycled wood in new construction products KNAUF and CONENOR) has successfully prepared first batches of wood fibre from different types of construction and demolition wood waste (Figure 1). This new fibre was manufactured out of wood waste collected by KS Laatuenergia. The waste has been sorted into three different categories according to origin and purity: clean wood fraction, painted wood fraction and building board containing wood. The wood fractions were first broken down to components with a pre-crusher. Still down-sizing the particle size, the wood components were then pre-refined by disc refiner (Figure 2). Wood material can be post-refined if smaller particles or even separate fibres are needed in application tests. The upgraded wood materials are planned to be used in reinforcement purposes in wood/plastic composites as well as in gypsum boards.
